The story of the plant

I am not above telling a dumb story about myself if I know it will make someone laugh. Here is one such story. Get ready- this one is a doozy.

I have the most thoughtful friends- the kind of friends who not only remember my birthday, but also take me out to breakfast and give me presents for the occasion. One of these presents was a gorgeous plant. I was so excited because if I were in the market for a plant- which I was not because I tend to kill plants- I would have picked out this exact one. It was perfect and I was determined to not kill this one.

I carefully loaded my beautiful plant in the truck and secured it from falling over on the drive home. When we got home I unloaded it right away and brought it inside placing it in my bathroom where I knew it would be safe from kids. It looked healthy, but I decided to give it some water because I was going to keep a plant alive for the first time ever.

When the kids got home from school that day the first thing I told them was that I got a new plant and it is in the bathroom and they are not to touch it because it is very special. I told them if they touched it they would be in big trouble. They understood that mommy was going to take care of this plant and it was very important.

A week went by and my birthday plant still looked really good. I had been meaning to ask my friend if she knew what kind it was because it sort of looked like a lemon tree I just saw online and I thought, ‘wouldn’t it be cool if it produced fruit?!’ I would turn it every time I was in the bathroom so that it got enough sunlight.

One day my mom came over and asked if I wanted her to water my plants. I told her no because I was taking care of them now on a schedule and didn’t want my new plant to get too much water. A few days later I thought I saw the leaves turning a little brown and wondered if I was giving it too much water. I thought about ordering an automatic waterer for it that prevents it from getting too much or too little water. I was determined to grow a plant for the first time in my life! I could do this. How hard could it be?!

After about a month of caring for my plant- and doing amazing I must add- I was cleaning the plant stand. I decided to pull some dead leaves off the bottom and I noticed that I had somehow not taken the tag off my precious plant. I went to cut the tag off and that is when I noticed it- the.leaves.were.fabric. 😲

MY PLANT WAS FAKE.

I sat there dumbfounded for a minute. I had been watering a fake plant for a month. I had carefully turned it to get even sunlight, had a watering schedule with reminders in my phone, even googled how to care for a house plant. I had no words for what I just discovered.

All this plant love for nothing. Well, not completely for nothing- because we had the biggest laugh ever over this fake plant story. My friends still give me a hard time for this one!

Hope you got a laugh out of it, too!

Until next time,

karla
