Camper Flipping Series: Choosing a design theme

Now you have found a camper, completed demolition, and chosen a layout. Now you’re ready for a really fun part- choosing a design theme!

The possibilities are endless when choosing a design for your camper project. Here are three things to consider when moving forward with this step.

1. Small space means you can do anything!

Camper projects have little square footage which means even if you have expensive taste and need material that is $10 a square foot you are probably only covering an area such as a backsplash or dinette area that is 10 sq feet or less! So, I try to keep cost down, but I do splurge on quality products and it works out because there usually isn’t too much area to cover.

I do recommend reading reviews and focusing on high quality products because even though the square footage in campers is small- if the camper is used often it will have high traffic in those small quarters so splurge on quality.

2. Look for inspiration- find your style

Decorating a camper has never been easier due to the unlimited inspiration pictures online! We have Pinterest, Instagram, and many other websites with some adorable campers.

When I am trying to find inspiration for a camper I often look at Pinterest and save the pictures that catch my eye the most. Then, I look for a common theme in the photos I saved. Are they mostly neutral or modern decor? Is there a splash of color? Is there a retro theme? Is it whimsical? You get the idea- find your style.

Also, just because you see a lot of campers with a similar look does not mean that you need to do everything the same. Some of my favorite campers were ones that I dared to be different.

Be you and be awesome- let your style shine through in your camper decor.

3. Make it up as you go

What?! Make it up as I go? What kind of advice is that!? Well, sometimes you think you have a plan, but when you start down that path you either think of better ideas or you may realize that the original idea is not working out the way that you hoped. Thank goodness for plan Bs.

This is one of my favorite parts of working on campers. The creativity that is required to adapt to a need for change. Sometimes what I had in my head is just not working out and I have to think outside the box to make something else work- and every time it ends up better than my original idea!

One thing that I do that really helps during this phase is I go to sleep every night visualizing the camper and the decor. I walk through it in my mind and see what I am planning. I think of every wall and every inch of the camper and sometimes I think of really good ideas in this quiet space and the next morning I make note of these ideas!

This really is one of the most fun parts of camper renovation. Take a few weeks to really think of your plan for the design theme and make an Amazon list or a folder on your phone to store screenshots of decorating ideas. Scroll through your materials and make sure they all complement eachother well.

A friend who has an eye for decorating is also an added plus in this step- running your ideas by someone who has a love for decorating may validate your ideas or give you additional things to consider!

Happy camper flipping!

Until next time,
